Riots in Muzaffarnagar resulted in ruined homes for thousands of Muslim families. These pictures show the homes they had to leave behind and flee for safety. Also shown are the horrid living conditions they had to adapt to. From one moment, living in a warm, familiar and hospitable place you've called home for years, to another living in a mushy field with tents propped up, in the chilling December winter. Virtually no supplies, no healthcare facilities and no employment. The camps were cold and damp, with sporadic showers making it muddy and cold thus even worse.

After the occupants fled in fear of losing their lives, the abandoned houses were further demolished in hopes of making it impossible for the original owners and inhabitants to later come back and claim them.

These photographs were taken in December 2013. These riots happened in preparation for the upcoming election.
